How to Apply

The Graduate Program in Earth and Space Science (ESS) is a multidisciplinary research program associated with the Department of Earth and Space Science & Engineering (ESSE) and the Centre for Research in Earth and Space Science (CRESS). The graduate program provides postgraduate instruction and research experience for graduate students working towards either MSc or PhD degrees. Research is carried out under the supervision of ESS faculty members, who are drawn from a number of science departments within York University or Adjunct Faculty Members appointed to the Graduate Program.

There will be three intakes for the 2020–2021 Academic Year in the Earth & Space Science Graduate Program.
– the first application deadline is February 15th, 2020, for entry beginning in Fall (September 2020).
– the second application deadline is August 15th, 2020, for entry beginning in Winter (January 2021).
– the third application deadline is December 15th, 2020, for entry beginning in Summer (May 2021).

A complete application package must be received by the Graduate Admissions Office at York University by the deadline date. Applications are then considered by the Graduate Program Assessment Committee. Decisions on applications are usually announced in late March or early April (FALL intake), late July or early August (WINTER intake) and late November or early December (SUMMER intake). The number of applicants exceeds the number of positions available. Meeting minimum admissions requirements is not a guarantee of admission.

English Language Requirements

When an applicant's first language is other than English, consideration for admission includes establishing an acceptable level of language proficiency by completing a language proficiency test. (Graduate Studies does not require language tests from applicants who have completed two years or more at an accredited university in a country (or institution) where English is the official language of instruction.)

Accommodations for Graduate Students

There is a distinction between Academic Accommodations and Workplace Accommodations that you should be aware of. You may require one or both, as a graduate student at York University, and they have different administrative pathways. The latter is relevant only to students who hold, or expect to hold, CUPE 3903 work assignments as part of their funding package.

For both sorts of accommodation, you may want to initiate a conversation with your Graduate Program Director (GPD), who can be a conduit to the relevant offices, and a source of support for tailored planning of your academic and work pathway through your degree. If you are not comfortable approaching your Graduate Program Director, you can find further information on the Faculty of Graduate Studies website.
